The XD Falcon (1979–1982) is where Ford Australia began quietly tightening everything up. Mechanically it was an evolution of the XC, but electrically it marked a noticeable step forward in reliability, wiring quality, and overall system robustness.
It’s the point where Ford started building electrical systems that felt more “finished” rather than simply functional.

The XD Falcon runs a conventional 12-volt negative earth electrical system built entirely around mechanical and relay-based operation.

Upgrade Potential
The XD Falcon is highly upgradeable due to its simple and accessible electrical system.
Common upgrades include:
- High-output alternators for modern accessory loads
- AGM battery upgrades for improved reliability
- Upgraded grounding kits
- LED lighting conversions
- Modern stereo installations with minimal integration complexity
With no ECU or electronic network, modifications remain straightforward and highly reversible.
The XD Falcon electrical system represents a mature version of Ford Australia’s analogue engineering approach. It is simple, durable, and highly serviceable, with just enough refinement over the XC to improve reliability without introducing unnecessary complexity.
