The XA Falcon (1972–1973) marks the start of Ford Australia’s first locally designed Falcon generation, and with it came a more refined approach to electrics. While still firmly rooted in early-’70s simplicity, the XA’s electrical system feels like the first time Ford stepped back and built the Falcon as a complete package rather than a collection of components.

It’s still fully analogue — no computers, no electronic fuel control — but it’s noticeably more consistent and better thought out than its predecessor.

System Overview

The XA Falcon runs a conventional 12-volt negative earth electrical system built around mechanical switching, relay control, and a basic charging circuit.

Key components include:

  • Belt-driven alternator system (externally regulated on most variants)
  • Conventional lead-acid battery
  • Carburetted engine with distributor ignition
  • Mechanical choke system
  • Relay and fuse-based accessory circuits

Everything is direct and physical. If something fails, it’s almost always a wire, a switch, a relay, or an earth point — not a module or sensor.

Alternator and Charging System

The XA Falcon uses a conventional alternator system, typically externally regulated depending on engine specification and production configuration.

Infotainment and Interior Electronics

Interior electronics in the XA are minimal and entirely analogue.

The XA Falcon is extremely modification-friendly due to its simplicity and lack of electronic integration.
