10 facts you may not have known about the XY
The XY Falcon was released in October 1970. It was a minor facelift of the XW. It was the fourth and final update of the second generation of Australian Ford Falcons.
To date it is one of the most popular Australian cars ever built and enjoys a cult following of many devoted fans. It is arguably the most popular Falcon ever built in Australia. It featured squared off, aggressive styling with plenty of power, even by today’s standards. To many it was the perfect Australian muscle car even though a 2 door coupe was not available with the XY.
The XY was available with 2 inline 6 (3.3L 97kW, 4.1L 116kW) engines as well as 2 V8 (4.9L 164kW, 5.8L 186kW) engines.
Nearly 120 000 XY Falcons were produced between October 1970 and March 1972. Prices started at $2 435 for the base model manual sedan.
It is worth noting that the XY had a 4×4 ute. In hindsight it appears as though this though was ahead of its time as you see many 4×4 utes on the market today.
Today the XY’s are collectors cars, some fetching more than $100 000 on the open market. Similar to the XW Falcon, even the base model XY’s fetch a premium. They have withstood the test of time and when well maintained they look the part of a classic Australian muscle car. Ask any Ford enthusiast what their favourite Falcon is, almost more likely than not they will say the one they have got now or the XY. With superb performance and a tough, aggressive appearance the XY Falcon is seeing its value increase as time goes by.
