The XB Falcon was available to the Australian public for the first time from September 1973. It was a mild facelift of the previous model. Changes in general, even mechanical were quite minimal.
Despite the minimal cosmetic and mechanical changes approximately $3.8 million was spent developing the XB. The main point of emphasis for the XB from the perspective of Ford engineers was to iron out the kinks and issues that were encountered with the previous model XA. The XA Falcon featured a brand new body shape and a new wheelbase. With such a drastic change
The main issue to be ironed out with the upgrade, the general ride and handling. Refinements gave the XB a smoother, quieter and more responsive ride. Almost anyone who has been behind the wheel of a stock standard XA and a stock standard XB can feel the difference from behind the wheel, despite being in a similar looking car with an almost identical engine and transmission in it.
The engine and transmission options, carried over with refinements made to the engine to increase performance and fuel efficiency while attempting to make the engine smoother and quieter.
The XB marked a definite improvement over the XA, very much recognised by buyers. Although it was up against stiff competition from the HQ and HJ Holdens, the XB still sold well. The 2 millionth Ford sold in Australia was an XB. Prices started from $3 236. Production spanned from September 1973 until July 1976. The XC Falcon replaced it.
