The EA Falcon, introduced in March 1988, replacing the XF Falcon. It is the first of the fifth generation of Australian Ford Falcons. It was the first of the E series of Fords which would remain in production until the introduction of the AU Falcon in 1998. The EA was loosely based on a European design and was the result of a $700 million plus investment by Ford Australia.
The EA was a complete make over of the previous model. Not only did it feature drastically new styling from the base up, it also included a new engine line up. The EA’s styling was rounder and broader than the previous model. .
The EA Falcon would only be available as a sedan or a wagon. Ford decided to keep with the XF Falcon as its utility during the EA production run.
The EA introduced 3 new engines, all inline 6’s (3.2L 90kW, 3.9L 120kW, 3.9L 139kW). The 3.2L engine, dropped during the EA Production run. These new engines were much smoother, and more economical than the engines they replaced.
The EA sold quite well with just under 224 000 produced before it was replaced by the EB. The 2 millionth Ford Falcon to be sold in Australia was an EA Falcon.
The EA was a completely new model, so it was not without its faults. The engines were an immediate upgrade to the units they replaced, the 3.9L multipoint fuel injected engine was by far the highlight. The bodywork and build quality did have a number of issues. The exterior panels were weaker than one would expect and many EA’s would suffer from warped panels that would easily dent and rust.
Straight original EA Falcons are becoming hard to find these days but offer great value for money and surprisingly good fuel efficiency and performance.
