Ford AU Falcon Light Globe Specifications

The AU Falcon was introduced in September 1998 as the results of a substantial $700 million investment by Ford Australia. It was the first of the sixth generation of Australian Ford Falcons. The series 2, introduced in April 2000 and the series 3 AU in November 2001.

It was a complete make over of the previous model EL Falcon. It featured all new rounder, more striking style compared to previous models. Essentially it was shorter and higher than the previous model. European influence featured with the AU, despite not being sold in Europe.

The styling aimed to target a larger demographic. Market research had shown that most Ford Falcons sold to middle aged males. The main idea of the AU was to give a more contemporary look that would not only appeal to its current buying market but others as well, namely younger drivers.

Despite the solid mechanicals the AU drew much criticism due to its controversial styling. The controversial styling slightly toned down with the release of the series 2 and series 3 AU Falcons. Unfortunately the styling of the car was not to the taste of everyone so it did not sell quite as well as what Ford had hoped. This is a real shame as the AU had the potential to be one of, if not the greatest Ford Falcons ever produced in Australia.

An AU Ute was available alongside to sedan and wagon from June 1999. This is the first time a Ute had been sold alongside the wagon and sedan model bearing the same name since the XF sedan and wagon, replaced in 1988.

It featured a petrol inline 6, and LPG inline 6 (both 4.0L) as well as a 5.0L V8 and a 5.6L V8. Despite appearing to be similar to the EL’s they were much more refined, much more fuel efficient and more powerful.

Ultimately production of the AU Falcon ceased in September of 2002, replaced by the BA Falcon. Prices for the AU started at $30 690.
